Lyle Ashton Harris: Our first and last love
"Lyle Ashton Harris: Our first and last love" explores the artistic practice of photographer and artist Lyle Ashton Harris, a Bronx native. Featuring photographs and installations from both his famous and lesser-known series, the exhibition highlights the artist's examination of identity and self-portraiture. It also delineates some of the central themes in his work from the last 35 years.
The exhibition places a special focus on Harris's recently completed "Shadow Works." These photographic prints are set within stretched Ghanaian funerary textiles, along with shells, shards of pottery, and the artist’s own hair. These earlier artworks and reference materials, personal snapshots, and handwritten notes all illustrate Harris’s layered approach.
Museum admission is pay-what-you-wish/suggested admission.
