This is the 29th year that New York City’s stretch of Fifth Ave. from 82nd St. north to 105th St. becomes a pedestrian mall from 6 to 9pm, and the nine museums along the way throw their doors open to the public -- for free! While there’s the usual frenzy to get to as many museums as humanly possible in a three-hour stretch, there’s also lots of fun to be had with performing artists and street musicians along the way.The best way to do it is to take a bus up Madison Ave. to 104th St., walk one block west to Fifth Ave., and begin at El Museo del Barrio (1230 Fifth Ave.), where the very gripping current exhibit, The Disappeared (Los Desaparecidos), documents the plight of tens of thousands of people who were kidnapped, tortured, or killed by Latin American right-wing dictatorships from the late 1950s to the 1980s.One block south you’ll find the Museum of the City of New York, which is very enlightening, particularly for first-time visitors. Then you’ll traverse down to 92nd St., where the Jewish Museum is currently showing its marvelous celebration of the sculpture of Louise Nevelson; then it’s the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum at 91st in the former Andrew Carnegie mansion (an experience in itself) followed by my personal favorite, the National Academy Museum, mid-block between 88th and 89th Sts. The National Academy is in the midst of its 182nd Annual Exhibition of Contemporary American Art, just bursting with its members’ best works (Lorraine Shemesh’s Precipice (2007) is pictured). One block south is the unmistakable architectural shape of the Guggenheim, now in the process of an extensive renovation of its own Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building. The biggest lines may be at the door of Neue Galerie at 86th St., where Van Gogh and Expressionism has been drawing huge crowds all spring. The Goethe-Institut is next at 83rd St., and that faces the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where you may have time to wind up getting a peek at the newly opened Greek and Roman Galleries. This night is a real treat to the “artbeat” of New York City -- don’t miss it!Let’s go in a completely different direction now -- out to Governors Island. It’s a unique destination with sweeping views of New York Harbor and the panorama of New York City. Few realize that it’s still open to visitors on certain weekends and this is one of them, with a festive free event that makes the excursion even more fun. You’re invited to a Roaring ’20s Dance and Hot Jazz Picnic on Saturday, June 9, from noon to 4pm. Watch great dancers shimmy under the shady trees or venture onto the dancefloor yourself to the sounds of the 1920s-style “Dreamland Orchestra” and let the pros teach you the Peabody or the Charleston. A free ferry service departs from a pier just north of the Staten Island Ferry starting at 9am Saturday. To get all the details, go to www.govisland.com -- and have a ball!
