If you’ve caught it before, know that this year’s magical holiday journey is something new from the moment the world-famous Rockettes kick it off with a brand-new show opening and follow that with a tour-de-force new number, showcasing those gams in never-before-seen, glittering red and gold candy-colored costumes. There’s also a new state-of-the-art LED screen (“the largest flying screen in the world”), which will be incorporated into almost every scene, enriching such favorites such as “The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” and “The Living Nativity” by complementing them with rich colors and 3-D imagery and landscapes. This year’s show commences as the Rockettes arrive with their eye-popping Reindeer number. As Santa and the reindeer depart the North Pole for Radio City, audience members will enjoy a magical 3-D sleigh-ride journey through New York City, all leading up to the aforementioned new scene, “The 12 Days of Christmas,” a 7-minute, tap-infused number featuring the Rockette’s energetic interpretation of the holiday favorite. With over 80 years under their collective belt, the Rockettes continue to demonstrate their eye-high kicks and precision dance routines with the same exuberance and energy they did back in 1925 and at Radio City’s opening night on Dec. 27, 1932. The Rockettes, discovered and brought to New York by consummate showman S.L. (Roxy) Rothafel, who first dubbed them the “Roxyettes,” shared the stage that night with 17 diverse acts — including the Flying Wallendas, Ray Bolger, and Martha Graham. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular debuted one year later. The legendary “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” choreographed by Rockettes’ founder Russell Markert, premiered on the Music Hall’s Great Stage that year, as did the remarkable “Living Nativity,” both of which are still favorite scenes in the show. Originally performed as a holiday “gift” between movie screenings, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular began its full 90-minute format to overwhelming public response in 1979. Over the past 27 years, audiences have steadily grown. This year, more than a million people from all 50 states and throughout the world are expected to attend the show at Radio City Music Hall, making it the number-one live show in America. (More people see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular in its nine-week run than the number-one Broadway show is seen in a full year.) This year, the Christmas Spectacular can also be seen in Toronto, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Boston, and Nashville. In the past few years, “Santa’s Workshop” and “White Christmas in New York” have emerged as new audience favorites. “White Christmas in New York” glistens with the Rockettes donning glamorous, shimmering costumes as the stage is transformed into a scene right out of a romantic New York Christmas, including storefront windows along Fifth Avenue and an ice rink with real ice skaters. The new LED screen will create a breathtaking New York skyline and snowy Central Park scene that will showcase the Rockette metamorphosis from storefront mannequins into dancing snowflakes, while New York is transformed into a winter wonderland. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes runs through Dec. 30. Prices range from $40 to $85 ($150-250 for VIP seating). Tickets are available online at www.radiocity.com or at the Radio City Box Office (50th St. & Sixth Ave.).
