Really Real - Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)
Through November 21, 2009 -
Last at BAM with the Bessie Award-winning Everywhere (2005 Next Wave Festival), Wally Cardona and company return with Really Real, a delicately calibrated exploration of our species. Balancing composer Phil Kline's affecting music with Cardona's architecturally exacting movements, his elegant and uncompromising troupe -- accompanied by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus -- mines the hard-wired forces that make us who we are.
As always with Cardona, each new dance builds subtly on the last; in Really Real, he hones in on the nuances of the individual caught in the collective. Never overt in his choreography, he transforms inventive spatial juxtapositions and seemingly simple actions into other-worldly expressions of what it means to be human.
Kepler - Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)
Through November 21, 2009 -
Regarded as one of the most important composers of our time, minimalist pioneer Philip Glass continues to enthrall audiences around the world with his ever-evolving operas, orchestral works, and film scores. With Kepler, Glass pushes into the sonic and celestial beyond in a concert version of his opera about Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), a founding father of modern science who discovered the laws of planetary motion.
Spacious, elemental, and imbued with wonder, Glass' hypnotic score becomes the sound of the cosmos as we witness Kepler struggling to reconcile scientific discovery with the divine. Celebrated conductor Dennis Russell Davies and Bruckner Orchestra Linz support a stellar cast and 42-member chorus drawn from the Upper Austrian State Theatre, Linz, in this illuminating portrait of science at the dawn of our modern age.

Through November 22, 2009 -
T. Schreiber Studio, recipient of 5 2009 Back Stage Readers Poll Awards, including Best Off-Off Broadway Theatre, and nominated for 5 NY Innovative Theatre Awards, presents the Tony Award-winning play ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD.
In his thoughtful and witty play, Tom Stoppard riffs on the greatest mystery of all time -- Death. And along the way he dabbles with such trifles as destiny and free will. Does life consist of a series of random events, or is it controlled by fate? In the end does the journey matter when the destination is the same? ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD follows Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Hamlet's bewildered friends, as the tragedy in Elsinore unfolds. Performed in the round atop a directionless compass, T. Schreiber Studio's production of this modern classic offers an especially intimate look at Rosencrantz and Guildenstern as they observe the crumbling world around them and march toward the Bard's inescapable conclusion.

The rituals of Mikkyo Buddhism, or the "Secret Teachings" as the newly imported doctrine was called, involve a preponderance of arrestingly beautiful and fearsome images that aim to reveal ultimate truths to the initiated. At the core of Mikkyo is the Mandala of Both Realms, paired cosmic diagrams of the Diamond World and the Matrix World. The installation explores the art of Mikkyo Buddhism from the models used to create these mandalas to the images they inspired. Important early iconographic drawings, paintings, sculpture, and textiles from the Metropolitan's permanent collection are displayed with outstanding works from other institutions and private collections.

It will show that the painter's utopian vision was directly influenced by these sister arts and will shed light on the subjects of a number of Watteau's images. A Four-Part Fine Art Exhibition - Agora Gallery
Through December 11, 2009 -
Pulsing with a vibrant energy, Agora Gallery's The Rhythm of Color displays the expressive central role that an artist's palette plays in the creation of a painting. Crafting their personal inspirations in a variety of styles, this exhibition features a collection of painters that are united in their understanding of the intimate relationship between color and emotion. Persistence of Form daringly explores the experience of our modern world through the eyes of the artist. Beautifully crafted imagery abounds in this choice selection of paintings as the artists inject wit, fantasy, and sensitivity into their vision of humanity. The works are raw and physical, daring to examine inwardly while holding an unadulterated mirror to the world to expose both the ills and the joys to be found. Color of Transformation is a wonderfully diverse grouping of contemporary painters working at the forefront of their medium. With an adept eye for form, the featured artists swathe their imagery in wonderfully rich colors to maximize both visual and emotional reactions. With influences ranging from music to the natural world, visitors will enjoy exploring and interpreting the messages so brilliantly expressed through the power of color. Exhibiting a wide range of contemporary art, Metamorphosis dives into a vast cauldron of fiery inspiration. We see the humanness behind the form, we find joys, fears, intrigue, and power. There is an expanse of inventive styles, as elemental forms and dynamic figures transform the desire for understanding into action, in the same manner of the early explorers. To make the unknown, known: to see what lies over that horizon.Tues- Sat, 11a.m. - 6 p.m.

Through December 13, 2009 -
A revealing glimpse into rural and urban daily life in China, beyond the glossy veneer of the economic boom. For the debut presentation of this traveling exhibition in America, 100 of these photographs have been selected for their union of social documentation and aesthetic expression. Taken during the years 1951 through 2003, these photographs are of a very high aesthetic order, displaying an extraordinary range of human emotion and activity, urban and rural, public and private. The exhibit is not a study of things or of places, but of people; not famous people but the anonymous and ordinary, engaged in daily life. It presents neither ideological paragons nor moral admonitions but the vitality of a nation, lodged in its diversity. These photographs reflect the radical change the country has gone through in the past half century and break through all the stereotypes of life in China that photography itself has sometimes been used to create.
