Founded by Havana-born bassist and vocalist Ignacio Piniero in 1927, Septeto Nacional has played an important role in Cuba's music scene for more than seven decades.
Pioneers of Son, a rhythmic blend of African and Cuban music that evolved into Salsa, the Mambo, and Latin jazz, the group was the first Son band to incorporate trumpet as a lead instrument.
The group gained global recognition with their performance at the World Exposition in Seville in 1928. Septeto also hold the honor of being the first band to mention "salsa" in a song.
The group returns to the U.S. after more than a decade; this is a historic event

Now in its second year, OnBoard Tours' NY See the Foliage! Tour allows sight-seers to experience the full splendor of a New York autumn through a four-hour intimate tour of the Hudson Valley. The tour leaves Manhattan via the George Washington Bridge and begins down the scenic New Jersey Palisades Parkway, stopping at the quaint Lookout Inn refreshment stand for a spectacular view of the New York City skyline in full autumn colors. The tour continues north past Bear Mountain Bridge, the first bridge built across the Hudson River, through Bear Mountain State Park, and past Fort Montgomery. The last stop on the tour is a 45-minute layover in Highland Falls, NY, just outside of West Point, where passengers can explore and take a light meal. The tour guide accompanies passengers when they leave the bus, and is always available to answer questions. Two departure times: 9am and 1:30pm.

In Prima, five arresting performers explore a world of pure sensation and energy. Teasing out the feminine and the virile, they are alternately playful and bashful as they navigate sexuality and temptation. The company's process and technique is influenced by the Gaga training of Ohad Naharin. Lee and Saar are recipients of the Six Point Fellowship 2007-2009, the Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography for 2008, and the New York Foundation for the Art Fellowship for 2008.

Japanese Mandalas: Emanations and Avatars - Metropolitan Museum of Art

The introduction of esoteric Buddhism to Japan from mainland China in the ninth-century forever changed the visual landscape of Japanese religion and of Japanese art as a whole. The rituals of Mikkyo Buddhism, or the "Secret Teachings" as the newly imported doctrine was called, involve a preponderance of arrestingly beautiful and fearsome images that aim to reveal ultimate truths to the initiated. At the core of Mikkyo is the Mandala of Both Realms, paired cosmic diagrams of the Diamond World and the Matrix World. The installation explores the art of Mikkyo Buddhism from the models used to create these mandalas to the images they inspired. Important early iconographic drawings, paintings, sculpture, and textiles from the Metropolitan's permanent collection are displayed with outstanding works from other institutions and private collections.

Watteau, Music, and Theater - Metropolitan Museum of Art

The exhibition will explore the place of music and theater in the work of the great early eighteenth-century French painter and draftsman Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), comparing an imagery of power, associated with the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV, with a more optimistic and mildly subversive imagery of pleasure, developed in contemporary opera-ballet and theater. It will show that the painter's utopian vision was directly influenced by these sister arts and will shed light on the subjects of a number of Watteau's images. In addition to material drawn from various departments of the Museum, including musical instruments, porcelains, and prints, there will be a number of major loans of paintings and drawings by Watteau and his contemporaries from other collections in the United States and Europe.

DESCRIPTION: Each class will consist of Body and Foot technique, followed by "choreography" snippets of Palos typically danced in Tablao. The "choreography" portion will specifically focus on clarifying structural elements of each palo (i.e., llamada, letra, falseta, remate, etc.) and understanding how to communicate and have the necessary control when dancing with musicians.
Rebeca Tomás began her dance training in Granada, Spain, later moving to Madrid, where she trained at the internationally renowned Flamenco Academy, Amor de Dios. While in Spain, she appeared at tablaos such as Las Carboneras, Al Andalus, and el Juglar. In the U.S., Rebeca performs and tours with numerous Flamenco dance companies, including Edwin Aparicio Flamenco Company, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, and Jorge Navarro¹s Pasión Flamenca. In spring 2008, she received a grant from the Jerome Foundation to travel to Sevilla and deepen her studies in Bata de Cola technique. Also in 2008, she received a scholarship to attend Jacob's Pillow Summer Intensive. There, the distinguished flamenco company Noche Flamenca and Soledad Barrio invited her to join the company, with whom she has continued to dance and tour internationally.

Discover how the rise and fall and rise again of the beer brewing industry tells a larger story about the neighborhood of Williamsburg, the borough of Brooklyn, and even the country as a whole. On this tour, we visit the Brooklyn Brewery and sample all the beers on tap, and then we explore the heart of the old Brewers Row in the eastern part of Williamsburg, once a German-speaking community known for its brewhouses and beer gardens. We check out a few of the last remaining brewery buildings and a beautiful church from the 19th century; talk about what happened to the local brewing industry; explore the diverse cultures and mom and pop businesses that make the neighborhood what it is today; and discover how beer brewing has returned to Brooklyn. Along the way, we visit a couple of restaurants and merchants, hear the stories of residents past and present, and, of course, have a taste of some of the finest food and beer Brooklyn has to offer today.

Flamenco Dance Incorporating Props for Adv. Beginners Tuesdays, 6:30-8PM Flamenco Latino Studio 244 W54 St., 4th fl. (bet. Broadway and 8th Ave.) Single class $20, 4-pack $70 (ONLY $17.50/class)
Technique and choreography for dances that use...
-- castanets and Sombrero Cordoves. For example, Tanguillos de Cadiz, and Garrotin (hat only) dances.
--Abanico (fan) as in such dances as Guajiras (fan + castanets) and Caracoles (fan only).
-- manton (shawl) used in Solea and Seguiriya.
We plan to rotate palos. We have extra fans, mantons, hats and castanets at the studio in case you forget yours!
