Running between 34th and 42nd Streets west of Fifth Avenue, this hub houses several landmarks that have been revamped and modernized, but have not lost their historic appeal. The Empire State Building was built in 1931, then the world's tallest skyscraper with 102 stories reaching 1,454 feet. Although it has now been surpassed by numerous other buildings, the famous observatory on the 86th floor remains popular seven days a week. NY SKYRIDE, an “aerial virtual tour simulator,” can be accessed on the second floor.Also along 34th street, you will find Macy’s famous Herald Square location. As the final stop for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, this department store boasts nine floors containing everything from beauty products to apparel,to dinnerware. Ride the old wooden escalators to the 6th floor, and be sure to visit The Cellar for delicious gourmet shops.Seventh Avenue serves as a fashion runway and center of the Garment District, which is located between Fifth and Ninth Avenues from 34th to 42nd Street. Experience the Fashion Walk of Fame, where you can find Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, Halston, Calvin Klein, Anne Klein and Oscar de la Renta -- not to mention Diane von Furstenberg and Liz Claiborne, who were inducted in 2008. Appropriately, the Fashion Institute of Technology is also tucked between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. The Museum at FIT, which promotes fashion knowledge through exhibitions, is open Tuesday through Friday, noon-8pm, and Saturday, 10am-5pm. However, you should not let these prestigious names intimidate you; there are also numerous smaller, individually owned stores selling inexpensive handbags and shoes along Seventh Avenue. Madison Square Garden, the world’s most famous arena, is also nestled between Seventh and Eighth Avenues and 31st and 33rd Streets. Hosting annual theatrical performances, professional sporting drafts, television premieres and award ceremonies, The Garden is also home to the Knicks, Liberty, Rangers, and numerous concerts. The box office is open 9am-6pm Monday through Friday, 10am-6pm on Saturday, and is closed on Sundays.Penn Station is located beneath Madison Square Garden and is the busiest train station in the United States, serving Amtrak, the MTA, New Jersey Transit, and the Long Island Rain Road. Port Authority Bus Terminal is located a few blocks north at Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street.East on 42nd street, the New York Public Library can be found at the intersection of Fifth Avenue. Open since 1911, this beautiful Beaux Arts building boasts a prestigious presence and is regarded as one of the great institutions of knowledge of the world. The Library has won the Book Award for Journalism, the Young Lions Fiction Award, and the Reference Service Award, among many others. If you need a mental break, relax on the grandiose front steps and enjoy a larger-than life luscious cupcake from Crumbs, a shoe-box sized bakery found just around the corner at 1114 Avenue of the Americas. With varieties such as red velvet, s’mores, cookie dough, and grasshopper, you will not be disappointed. The Library is open Monday and Thursday through Saturday from 10am-6pm and Tuesday-Wednesday from 11am-7:30pm. Tours of the Library are held Monday to Saturday at 11am and 2pm. Admission is free.On a sunny day, over 4,000 people can be found enjoying lunch in Bryant Park right behind the library. Grab a baguette sandwich at Le Pain Quotidien where even the bread is made with only organic ingredients. It can be found at 70 W. 49th Street between Fifth and Sixth Aves., just across the street from the park. Then head over to the park and be sure to snatch the first seat you see as they are hot commodities during the afternoon.
