Shopping in SoHo quick links: Bloomingdale's.Nightlife in SoHo quick links: Broome Street Bar.SoHo is a downtown New York City neighborhood South of Houston Street and north of Canal Street. It is bordered on the east by Lafayette Street and Nolita and on the west by the Hudson River. For most of the 20th century, however, SoHo was a rundown and neglected slum filled with manufacturers and wholesalers. When they were forced to relocate due to increasing rents and limited space, artists in the mid-1960s fled to the neighborhood. Attracted by the immense room, abundance of natural light, and low-to-non-existent rents, SoHo became the new headquarters for the New York art scene. Galleries quickly followed, bringing a substantial amount of money into the area -- along with the new chic art crowd.Today SoHo is trendy, eclectic, and always bustling with activity. Tourists and locals alike flock to this neighborhood. Stores range from national chains to unique boutiques, from Marc Jacobs, to H&M, to Evolution (a store that sells natural history collectibles usually found only in museums.) The larger stores are concentrated on Broadway and smaller stores fan out from there. After all that shopping visitors looking for a meal will be amazed at their array of choices. Some of the city’s best dining is found in the area. Anywhere you go in SoHo, there is bound to be a restaurant or cafe at your feet. So it comes as no surprise that the restaurants range from the most expensive to the budget priced, and they span every cuisine. Nightlife in the area is also impressive. Hot spots abound. New Yorkers flock to the bars, clubs and lounges.Retaining some of its artistic roots, SoHo is home to many of the city’s art galleries and features impressive art. Far from the bohemian starving artists that once filled the neighborhood, the art found in SoHo today is respected. Many of the galleries are on and around Spring Street. The art in this neighborhood is not only found in the galleries. In fact, SoHo is a historic district and its architecture is famous. The neighborhood used to be known as the cast- iron district, a term which still defines the architectural aesthetic of the neighborhood. The cast-iron buildings look back to the Industrial era and are unique in New York City for their dramatic detail and distinctive designs. Cobblestone still paves many of the streets enhancing the neighborhoods’ historic feel.SoHo is one of the top New York City locations for shopping, dining, nightlife, and art, but its riches don’t stop there. For example, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex on 76 Mercer Street is sure to please every music enthusiast. Its technologically based exhibits focus on the greatest moments in rock history. There is also the New York City Fire Museum, which tells the history of the New York City Fire Department, the famous Angelika Film Center, and the Children’s Museum of Arts. In SoHo the possibilities never end. -- Aleksandra Weglarz Archives: Today's Family & Kids Activites in Queens-Feb 9 Today's Family & Kids Activites in Brooklyn-Feb 9 Today's Family & Kids Activites in Bronx-Feb 9 Today's Family & Kids Activites in Manhattan-Feb 9 Happenings at B.
