The brand-new, $1.5-billion state-of-the-art home of the Bronx Bombers is finally ready -- it’s a warm afternoon, there’s a slight balm in the New York air, and the boys of summer are just taking the field for their pre-game warm-ups. At a moment like this, nothing at the ballpark tastes better than a foot-long hot dog and an ice-cold beer, right? Wrong. If USDA prime dry-aged beef, Maryland lump crab cakes, and lobster mac & cheese sounds more appetizing, head to Gate 6 and hop in the elevator to NYY Steak, where expertly prepared steakhouse fare awaits you. The entire stadium is of course, a shrine to the most successful franchise in sports history. But the décor at NYY Steak -- especially custom-made menus of Yankee blue leather and glass walls bearing the signatures of Yankee greats like Phil Rizzuto, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle -- bring guests feelings of reverence and class that no other sports-themed restaurant can compete with. (If you can’t squeeze into the restaurant on a game day, NYY Steak is open to the public for lunch Mon.-Fri. and dinner Mon.-Sat.) Whether it’s on a game day, before or after a stadium tour, or you’re simply craving the best meal in the Bronx, the veteran management team headed by former manager of restaurant operations in the old stadium Jacques Lamour provides the utmost in quality service and hospitality. Those seated toward the rear of the restaurant are privy to a view of the magnificent open kitchen and the all-star crew preparing your food. You may get a look at sous chef Josie Smith-Malave (Top Chef) prepping your steak tartare. Or see executive chef Jason Tillman (Le Cirque, the 21 Club, and David Burke & Donatella, among others) plating a gorgeous arrangement of grilled tuna chateaubriand with brown butter-roasted fingerling potatoes, and Dijon mustard hollandaise sauce on a custom-made dish bearing the familiar number 3 of the Great Bambino. The dessert menu ranges from New York-style cheesecake and crème brulee to the NYY Steak 151 Volcano and, my personal favorite, the Yoo-Hoo Float. Another impressive attribute is the broad and extensive wine list. Wines from Argentina, France, California, and Spain comprise an extensive but affordable wine list including sparkling wines and champagnes, and Cabernets ranging in price from $32 to $465. So if you still haven’t changed your mind about the dog and the beer, please be my guest. But you might want to put your name in now, and save some room during the 7th inning stretch for the best thing to happen to ballpark cuisine since, well, ballparks.
