  • New York City's largest outdoor festival, Harlem Week (www.harlemdiscover.com), has returned with yet another spectacular lineup of exciting concerts, events, and activities in honor of its 34th anniversary. Harlem week began 34 years ago as Harlem Day, a one-day tribute that was so astonishingly successful that more days were needed to showcase the community’s rich economic, political, and cultural history, to say nothing of the current, ever increasing artistic talent in Harlem. Above all, Harlem Day -- in its unique way -- was a day of encouragement and fellowship for New Yorkers in general and Harlemites in particular, many of whom had struggled for some years to see a positive future for urban America.

Each year Harlem Week has produced new activities highlighting another of the many positive and relevant aspects of the African-American, Latino, Caribbean-American, and European-American cultures of Harlem. In fact, in the same way that Black History Month is celebrated for more than four weeks, Harlem Week is more than a week, with many key events celebrated quite joyously throughout all of August and beyond.

The theme of Harlem Week 2008 is "The Health of Our Communities: Is Our Top Priority". Each event during this year's celebration will have a health twist to it. Outdoor events such as A Great Day In Harlem on July 27th at Ulysses S. Grant National Memorial will feature exhibitors that focus on healthy foods and healthy living initiatives. August 16th and 17th will feature the Health Fair & Expo and the Children's Festival which happen on the same two days, and will focus much of its entertainment and exhibits around recreation and exercise to promote a healthier, more active lifestyle to children and families. The Upper Manhattan Auto Show will place special emphasis on Hybrid and energy efficient automobiles within the show. The new event added this year that is already becoming a major is the Harlem 5k Health Walkathon taking place on Saturday, August 23rd. It will be a historic walk through Harlem passing by three of the four Harlem Historic Parks -- beginning at Morningside Park, continuing to St. Nicholas Park and ending at Jackie Robinson Park.

The schedule for Harlem Week is impressive, and encompasses everything from community events, to jazz, from their yearly auto show, to fashion shows. The week is launched on July 27 with “A Great Day in Harlem” featuring international exhibitors and vendors, cultural and gospel performances, an outdoor fashion show, live concert and more! That same day they will also have a “Family Unity Day” -- an arts and culture festival, as well as, later in the day, “A Harlem Gospel Caravan”, and a “New York’s Fashion Fusion” -- where cutting-edge urban designers, models, and talent from throughout the region take to the runway displaying a unique and exciting variety of hot urban fashions. And, finally, a “Concert Under the Stars”, with top performers present an unforgettable night of music and dance, from 6-9pm.

On Sunday, August 17, celebrate Harlem Day! This day-long extravaganza of events is themed, “Our Biggest Day!” and will be on multiple stages with live performance and entertainment. It starts with A Celebration of Gospel and Jazz, an event  held on three stages: the St. Nicholas Stage (W. 135th St. btw. Frederick Douglass Blvd. and St. Nicholas Ave.); the YMCA Stage (W. 135th St. btw. Malcolm X & A. C. Powell Jr. Blvds.); and the 5th Ave. Stage (W. 135th St. btw. 5th Ave. & Malcolm X Blvd.). All performances are from noon to 7pm.
A crowd favorite, the Upper Manhattan Auto Show, will be held at Howard Bennett Park from 9am to 5pm, and later that evening, don’t miss Stomping at the Savoy, a swing dance, jazz party, with outdoor dancing with a major Jazz Orchestra.

Harlem Week has become America's largest cultural celebration, and each year, it attracts millions of individuals to Harlem, the world's most famous neighborhood to share traditions, new trends, and that incomparable joie de vivre, which is nothing more than Harlem style.
