Mandrill: History Is a Drag
Edging dangerously close to a TED Talk for the sheer educational thrill of it, MANDRILL is an hour of comedy about gender, history, and playing dress up that happens to be done in rhyme. Blending storytelling, standup, multi-media, poetry, and a touch of drag, Tea takes an in-depth look at the entire history of human civilization and condenses everything from BCE to Barbie in 55 minutes of entertainment. If you’ve ever wondered how we got from being apes in loincloths one day to people in Parliament freaking out about boys/bois wearing dresses and lipstick the next, this is the show for you.
This show is a follow-up to Tea’s show CLOWNFISH, which took "Best of” at the 2019 Nugget Fringe Festival. Early iterations of MANDRILL have been workshopped in Sacramento, Los Angeles, Portland, and Denver to positive reception. One reviewer called it, "one of the most progressive and cutting-edge comedy performances I have ever seen”.
Tea Wade (they/them) has performed their eclectic and unique blend of verse, stand-up and storytelling in 44 states and 3 countries. Their first solo show, CLOWNFISH won Best of Fringe at the 2019 Nugget Fringe Festival. They studied at the short-lived Reckless Improv Theater in New York City and also studied at UCB. Fans of DnD actual play can listen to their podcast 1PDnD. They are currently seeking representation and somewhat regretfully hold a BFA in Theater from UC Santa Barbara.
