Beatles fans will be glued to their TVs Friday night, December 14, at 9pm, as THIRTEEN'S Great Performances presents the story behind the making of the controversial and surreal The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour (1967) on Magical Mystery Tour Revisited. Following the behind-the-scenes documentary, which features new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, the film will have a rare showing in its entirety.
In 1967, John, Paul, George, and Ringo had the world at their feet. It's impossible to overestimate the effect of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which was revolutionary, too. Everyone loved it – not quite the case with The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour.

There was wit and imagination aplenty, stunning visuals, tunes that skyrocketed up the charts; but viewers were baffled (some in Parliament, outraged) by the film's surreal narrative, filled with thinly veiled references to psychedelia and anarchy, set on a bus to the seaside. The next day, McCartney made the chat rounds to explain and, as one paper noted, “ to account for himself and the group.”
The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour is remastered and restored “to the highest technical standard with a remixed soundtrack.” Regarding the documentary, according to McCartney, “It's time to tell the story of why Magical Mystery Tour was made, how it was made, and the circumstances in which it was made.”
Lennon and Harrison appear in archival interviews and outtakes. Those sharing reminiscences include Peter Fonda, Terry Gilliam, and Martin Scorsese. The documentary was shot and directed by Francis Hanly.
Major funding for Great Performances is provided by the Irene Diamond Fund, Starr Foundation, Vivian Milstein, Agnes Varis Trust, Philip and Janice Levin Foundation, and viewers like you. For more information, visit www.pbs.org/gperf. -- Ellis Nassour
