This Week in New York City: A Free Philharmonic in the Park, plus Outdoor Art at the Met & in Midtown
by Kathy Novak - July 05, 2007

Some of my favorite things about summer are on the agenda this week. Topping the list has to be July 11, when the New York Philharmonic performs on Central Park's Great Lawn. The music is sensational, but then Tchaikovsky is topped off with a fireworks finale with the skyline as backdrop...you just can’t top that!

This Week in New York City: Celebrating the Long Weekend in Queens and Night at the Museum, a Day at the Morgan
by Kathy Novak - June 28, 2007

The Macy's 4th of July Fireworks have a remarkable backdrop: Brooklyn and Queens! The holiday weekend offers the perfect opportunity to explore Brooklyn's trendy DUMBO and Williamsburg neighborhoods, as well as Queens, both easily reached by short subway rides from anywhere in Manhattan.

This Week in New York City: Adventures in Midtown, Exploring the Library, Bryant Park, and Other Oases of Art
by Kathy Novak - June 21, 2007

These days, New Yorkers are busy shopping and snatching up summer bargains. But even bargains can get boring, and you need that cultural pause that refreshes.

This Week in New York City: Take a 'Trip' to the Whitney, Free Central Park Concerts, Outdoor Art & More
by Kathy Novak - June 12, 2007

Summer in the city! Nothing suits the season better than the new exhibit that opened recently at the Whitney Museum of American Art, a long-overdue testament to the groovy, often-hallucinogenic-drug-induced art of the late 1960s and early '70s.

This Week in New York City: The Museum Mile Festival and a Special Weekend on Governors Island
by Kathy Novak - June 07, 2007

It's my favorite week of the summer: The Museum Mile Festival happens this Tuesday, June 12. This is the 29th year that this stretch of Fifth Ave. becomes a pedestrian mall and the nine museums along the way throw their doors open to the public -- for free!

This Week in New York City: Monet Takes Over Wildenstein & Co., Apocalypse Then, Amelia Earhart & More
by Kathy Novak - May 31, 2007

There’s something about the paintings of Claude Monet that make me want to see them only during the warm days of late spring. So how fortunate that the largest Monet exhibition in three decades is in town!

This Week in New York City: Celebrating the Summer of Love, New York on the Water & More
by Kathy Novak - May 24, 2007

What better launch into the season than the new show that just opened at the Whitney: Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era is a trip through the 1960s and '70s, when pop culture was driven by the cultural revolution of America’s youth.

This Week in New York City: Women Rule NYC's Art World, plus Audubon at AMNH, MOMIX & More
by Kathy Novak - May 15, 2007

The sight of sculptress Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) herself was usually more arresting than her bold works of art. Her works are now the subject of a major survey at the Jewish Museum

This Week in New York City: Touring the City by Water, Jazz near Central Park, and Museum Mile
by Kathy Novak - May 09, 2007

Are you getting that urge to get out on the waters of the Hudson River? These gorgeous spring days are perfect for such sailings and there are many ways to get out there.

This Week in New York City: Audubon at AMNH and N-YHS & Outdoor Escapes Uptown & Midtown
by Kathy Novak - May 01, 2007

The best thing about the American Museum of Natural History is that they're always coming up with something new to bring visitors back another time. Now, it's "Audubon Alley" in conjunction with the New-York Historical Society.

This Week in New York City: Bryant Park and The Met Prepare for Summer
by Kathy Novak - April 24, 2007

Like most of the world's great cities, New York has made a special effort to host events in open spaces. For the last two decades, midtown's Bryant Park has been at the forefront of that movement.

This Week in New York City: Orchids and Puppet Theater, plus Top of the Rock & the Upper West Side
by Kathy Novak - April 19, 2007

Now that spring is in full bloom, you must make Rockefeller Center a stop this week with its International Orchid Show. Tens of thousands of orchids in all colors and sizes are on view on the concourse at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Then it's just an elevator ride to Top of the Rock...

This Week in New York City: Art and Cherry Blossoms in Brooklyn
by Kathy Novak - April 11, 2007

Brooklyn is blooming with cherry blossoms and art. This week, we’ll take you across the river to see for yourself. Plus: High- & low-tech fun for kids.

This Week in New York City: A Visit to Queens, plus Avant Garde Art, Sculpture & More
by Kathy Novak - April 03, 2007

So now we have the whole April showers thing to worry about, right? Last month it was the stock market. This is much easier to deal with.

This Week in New York City: Hidden Gems in Chelsea & Midtown, and a Day at the Natural History Museum
by Kathy Novak - March 28, 2007

I don't believe in being a "jaded" New Yorker. In fact, in a city brimming with so much to be discovered, I think it's a rather hazardous state of mind. I'm always open to new places so I can share them with you.

This Week in New York City: Van Gogh Stars at Neue Galerie, and the Best of Lower Manhattan
by Kathy Novak - March 20, 2007

Van Gogh is back in New York City -- big time! Neue Galerie has given over all of its exhibition space to a gorgeous new show entitled Van Gogh and Expressionism.

This Week in New York City: Rockefeller Center, All That Glitters Is Gold & More
by Kathy Novak - March 14, 2007

It's getting to be springtime, and that means that ice-skating days are dwindling. Don't miss the unforgettable experience of a twirl around The Rink at Rockefeller Center. Since opening on Christmas Day in 1936, it's attracted over a quarter-million visitors a year. It's easy to understand why.

This Week in New York City: Tranquility at the Morgan and Other 'Hidden' Gems
by Kathy Novak - March 07, 2007

We're well into March with St. Patrick's Day just around a Fifth Avenue corner. But before everybody starts the party, let me suggest a few places for a quiet moment.

This Week in New York City: Paul Taylor Dance, Carnegie Hall & More
by Kathy Novak - February 28, 2007

"Rave reviews" is putting it mildly when it comes to the Paul Taylor Dance Company. For starters, Vanity Fair has called Paul Taylor the "greatest choreographer in the world." Plus: NY icons the Russian Tea Room and Gracie Mansion.

This Week in New York City: The Luxurious Frick, Art for Sale, Grand Central & More
by Kathy Novak - February 22, 2007

Over the years, on my many visits to London's Tate Gallery, I stood admiringly before the paintings by George Stubbs. His depictions of animals and scenes of country life really transported me in time to bucolic late-18th-century England.

This Week in New York City: Beautiful Views on a Presidential Weekend
by Kathy Novak - February 12, 2007

As we head into the midwinter three-day weekend, better known as President's Day, we'll send you off in some diverse directions -- both indoor and out.

This Week in New York City: The 'Wonders' of Technology
by Kathy Novak - February 07, 2007

Ladies and gentlemen...children of all ages... No, it's not the circus that's come to town -- it's an indoor world of techno-wonder, perfect on a cold day when you want to bend your mind in a few futuristic directions.

This Week in New York City: Entertainment Uptown and Downtown
by Kathy Novak - February 02, 2007

It doesn't matter to me if the Groundhog sees his shadow this week -- winter is the time to sink into New York City's fantastic museum exhibitions and enjoy them to their fullest.

This Week in New York City: Finding Art in Unexpected Places
by Kathy Novak - January 22, 2007

Looking for something new on this trip to New York City? How about getting to know the East Village? Plus: Art in Central Park, MoMA, the National Black Fine Art Show, and more.

This Week in New York City: The City of Steinberg, Spanish Painting & More
by Kathy Novak - January 16, 2007

It was 1944 when artist Saul Steinberg made his debut on the cover of The New Yorker magazine. For six decades thereafter, his "human cats" and other cartoons lit up the pages of the publication. Moreover, his familiar map of the world -- which ends where the Hudson River crosses over into New Jersey and the horizon fades out of view -- has become a quintessential New York City icon.
