New York City is not only home to great cultural institutions, shops and events; it's also a place where there are plenty of things to do outside. If you're looking for ways to enjoy New York's beautiful summer weather, we've got some great suggestions for things you can do outdoors?from New York parks and outdoor cafes to flea markets, sporting events, and street fairs. Here are some of our favorite things to do in NYC this week that will get you out of the house!

Harvest Hay Rides - Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo
Through October 03, 2010 -

Explore the Zoo with your friends and family atop a tractor drawn wagon -- a seasonal adventure that is not to be missed! Hayrides will run on weekends and school vacation days (Columbus Day and Veteran’s Day) starting October 2nd through the end of November. Rides will start at the W.O.L.F. cabin and will run from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. Tickets are $2.00 and can be purchased in the gift shop.

3rd Annual Scarecrow Competition - Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo
Through October 23, 2010 -

Art classes, scout troops, corporations, community organizations, families, and individuals are invited to create their own scarecrow! We'll provide the frame - you make it as wild and wacky as you like! Scarecrows must be dropped off by October 23 and will be judged at the "Boo at the Zoo" event on October 31. For complete submission and competition rules, visit www.beardsleyzoo.org or call 203-332-4243.

Come fall in love with the new colony of African penguins in a new outdoor exhibit, offering views above and below the water.
