Dance, art galleries, museums, lectures -- you name it, there are plenty of things to do in NYC. From the New York City Ballet, to Alvin Ailey, from performances at the Metropolitan Opera, to live music at Madison Square Garden, New York has it all. Here is a selection of what's going on in New York this week.
Martha Graham Dance Company - Joyce Theater
Through March 03, 2013 - New York
Martha Graham Dance Company presents "Myth and Transformation" -- three compelling programs that explore how artists reinvent iconic stories to make forceful contemporary statements. Performances include a new production of Graham's erotic masterwork Phaedra, paired with The Show (Achilles Heels), a highly provocative interpretation of the Achilles legend created, choreographed, and directed by Richard Move, which was originally commissioned by the White Oak Dance Project. The work features an original score by Arto Lindsay with songs by Deborah Harry and Blondie and includes scenic art by Nicole Eisenman. An all-Graham program showcases three Greek-themed Graham masterworks: Cave of the Heart, The Errand into the Maze Project, and Night Journey. A third program features two premieres: the New York premiere of Doug Varone's Lamentation Variation, a haunting quartet set to Ravel, and the world premiere of From the Grammar of Dreams by Luca Veggetti with music by Kaija Saariaho.
Ballet Flamenco de Andalucia - New York City Center
Through March 09, 2013 - New York
Spain's renowned repertory company, directed by contemporary flamenco star Ruben Olmo, presents Metafora, a program that will transport the audience to the emotion, drama and passion of Andalucia, the cradle of flamenco. The performance by the 17-member company will feature castanets, fans, traditional flamenco "bata de cola" dresses and effervescent heel-and-toe step combinations, along with the power of "escuela Bolera" and the demanding technique and jaw-dropping athleticism of Spanish dance.
