In an era when the public simply cannot get its fill of the glitz, the glamor, the verbal faux pas and the random bursts of hilarity that come together to create an awards show, it’s nice to know that New York is doing its part to provide this thrill to folks like us on Thursday nights (through April 21) with Broadway's Next Hit Musical (Triad Theatre, 158 W. 72nd St., 212-868-4444; broadwaysnexthitmusical.com).
It’s impossible for me to spoil this glorious evening of improv, ad libs and loopy musical numbers, basically because the show I saw is not the show you’ll be seeing, but I can give you the format and performers. The First Act (granted, this is a bit of a misnomer since there is no official intermission) is an awards ceremony spotlighting four nominees for “Best Musical” (created from audience-submitted song titles -- all of them silly and/or risqué. The “Phony” is the coveted trophy presented to the winner based on audience applause). The Second Act is a madcap presentation of the entire “Phony Winning Musical.”
Hosting the show is Gregg Triggs (someone should sign him for the Tonys…really) with a cast made up of five improvisational pros (from a pool of eight). There is also a NYC celebrity co-host to spice things up and the amazing Gary Adler (co-author of Altar Boyz and musical director of The Radio City Christmas Spectacular) at the piano.
Check it out -- before April 21st -- at The Triad.
