Fountain Gallery, representing artists with mental illness and located at 702 Ninth Avenue, today announced the upcoming opening of In the Black. This group exhibition, spotlighting artists’ use of Black in their work, will be on view from March 15 through May 9, 2012, with an Opening Reception on March 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. In the Black is curated by David Manilow.

“Technically, Black is the color that does not emit or reflect light in any part of the visible spectrum, but this description conveys none of its range,” said Manilow, a painter and a member of OWS Screen Printing Guild who lives and works in Long Island City and has previously curated two Fountain Gallery exhibitions. "Symbolically, perhaps no color evokes more loaded associations," continued Manilow. "In drawing, an illusion of form may be created through modeling black. But Black may also consume, eclipse or flatten. In this exhibition, the artists of Fountain Gallery evidence a dynamic range of expression in their use of Black.”

In the Black showcases nearly 40 works in mediums ranging from acrylic, oil and watercolor paintings and mixed media works to digital photographs and video.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and by generous support from The Jarvis & Constance Doctorow Family Foundation and The Renate, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust.

Fountain Gallery is the premier venue in New York City representing artists with mental illness. Founded by Fountain House in 2000 as a not-for-profit exhibition space for its member-artists living and working with mental illness, the Gallery sells original artworks and collaborates with a wide network of artists, curators and cultural institutions. Embracing artists who are emerging or established, trained or self-taught, Fountain Gallery cultivates artistic growth and makes a vital contribution to the New York arts community.

Artworks by Gallery artists may be viewed at: www.fountaingallerynyc.com.
